Week Three (8/24/15 - 8/28/15)

Monday, 8/24/15
Due Today: Signed syllabi.
Agenda: Write Your Own Creation Myth (Assigned) - Students are to write their own creation myth, using details from where they were born and their ancestral heritage.  Students should also use dialogue and sensory details to further develop their stories.  Each myth must include at least two of the following: (1) creation of the universe (something from nothing), (2) the existence of evils and death, (3) creation of men/women and their companions, (3) relationship between man and creator, and/or (5) the life cycle.  Each myth should be no more than two pages, typed and double-spaced.  Include an illustration for extra credit!  Due Friday, 8/28/15.
Homework: (1) Look up 15 facts about Sherman Alexie.  (2) Write Your Own Creation Myth.

Tuesday, 8/25/15
Agenda: (1) Sherman Alexie: Background. Students shared the facts they looked about Sherman Alexie to facilitate a discussion about the author and his life.  (2) Read "Indian Education" (handout) in class (popcorn reading).  After reading the story, we discussed the parallels in the story that exist in society today.
Homework: Write Your Own Creation Myth

Wednesday, 8/26/15
Agenda: "Indian Education" Group Activity - The class was split up into seven groups.  Each group was assigned a grade level and an accompanying set of questions.  We used these group questions to launch a broader class discussion about the story.
Homework: (1) Be prepared to share your answers with the class (if you have not already done so).  (2) Write Your Own Creation Myth.

Thursday, 8/27/15
Agenda: (1) Review Native American Literature Unit in preparation for tomorrow's quiz.  (2) We used the rest of the class period to work on the Write Your Own Creation Myth assignment.
Homework: (1) Study for the quiz tomorrow.  (2) Write Your Own Creation Myth.

Friday, 8/28/15
Due Today: Write Your Own Creation Myth
Agenda: (1) Native American Literature Unit - Exit Ticket Quiz.  (2) We used the rest of the class period to finish our "Indian Education" discussion from Wednesday.
Homework: None :)
