Personal Statements
Students will be given two different worksheets about writing a personal statement. Students should fill out the front page of the handout “Personal Mission Statement” to help them brainstorm in preparation for writing their personal statements. Then, they need to answer Prompt #1 (Freshman) and Prompt #2 (All Applicants), located on the other handout. Responses should be at least one page (handwritten) each.

How to log in and take the Matchmaker assessment:

1. Web address for career cruising is www.careercruising.com

2. Log on: Username: sm-perm number (example: sm-345678)

Password: use your network password

3. Select “Assessment Tab”

4. Select “start Matchmaker”

5. Select “I agree” box for Terms & conditions

6. Read instructions explaining what the colored responses mean then select “next”

7. Uncheck “high school”

8. Answer all of the questions and write down your top three career results.

How to take the Learning Style Inventory:
1. Select "Assessment Tab"
2. Select "Start Learning Style Inventory"
3. Follow the directions and take this assessment. When you are done, write down your results and their percentages.

Write Ups

Matchmaker Assessment - at least 1/2 page What were your top three career results?  Do you agree or disagree with your #1 result?  Why or why not?

Learning Style Inventory - at least ½ page
What were your learning styles and their percentages?  Do you agree with your #1 result?  Why or why not?  Please provide an example. Example: I agree that I am an auditory learner because I find that it helps to read information out loud when studying for a test.

Write ups are due by Monday, 1/25/16.

College Research Paper
Remember that the rough draft of your "Academics" section of your college research paper is due by Friday. Since we haven't had much time to get started on it, I will give you credit for the rough draft as long as you answer the four questions and get the information you need for that section.

Today, I passed out information regarding the career unit as a whole.  For the next five weeks, we will be working on various assignments related to colleges and careers.  Please see the handout for more detailed information.

College Research Paper
I passed out another handout regarding the requirements for the college research paper, due 2/10/16.  We went over the paper requirements and structure.  I will be checking on each student's progress periodically.  Please see the career unit handout for specifics.

Reminders
Please meet in the Cafeteria for tomorrow's class period.  There will be a presentation regarding 11th grade registration for next year's classes.

Students should bring their tablets to school next week for registration and research.

Prewrite: What are your five strongest skills?  What are your top five dream careers?  What are your plans for after high school (you may not say "I don' know")?  What college is your dream college?  Try to write at least one page.  Due at the end of the class period.
