Agenda

Socratic Seminar Groups
Students met in their Socratic seminar groups to answer the following questions for tomorrow’s discussion:
  1. How is Holden’s loneliness a constant theme in these chapters?  Provide and discuss 4-5 examples from the novel.
  2. Discuss Holden’s fascination with the ducks in Central Park.  Why is he so interested in what happens to them?  Why do you think the cab driver got so “upset” by the question?  What is the “deeper” meaning of their conversation?
  3. Reflect on the relationship of innocence v. experience.  What does Holden suspect about Jane’s past?  Describe Holden’s view on sex and relationships with girls.  Must have two quotes that support your answer.
  4. Do you think Holden is a “typical” teenage boy?  Do you think today’s teenage boys can relate to Holden?  Explain.  Discuss and provide 3-4 examples from the novel.
  5. Holden begins to feel sorry for Sunny, when and why?  Why do you think he did not have sex with Sunny?  How does this relate to the theme of innocence v. loss of innocence?
  6. Extra credit: Group comes up with questions of their own and leads the discussion.
