Agenda

Socratic Seminar
Today, I explained what a Socratic seminar was and how we would be conducting them each week we read The Catcher in the Rye.

Students will be given the seminar questions at the beginning of the week.  They will work in groups of four the day before to prepare for the seminar.

This Week’s Seminar Questions
1. What are possible explanations for Holden’s lack of motivation in school?  Provide at least 4 examples from the chapters.
2. Talk about Holden’s feelings for Jane Gallagher.  What assumptions can you make about his feelings for Jane as a result of his reactions both during and after her date with Stradler?
3. How does Holden’s composition (essay) give us insight into Holden’s character?  Discuss how his past has affected him.  Provide at least 4 possible ideas.
4. Is Holden crazy?  Is he a reliable narrator?  Do you “trust” him?  Explain.
5. If Holden was a teenager in 2016, what would he be like?  Provide at least 2 “real life” examples.
6. As a group consensus, what are your first impressions of Holden?  Do you like Holden?  Why or why not?

The Catcher in the Rye
We read chapters one and two in class today.  Students need to read chapter three (up through page 26) for homework.

Homework
1. Read chapter 3.
2. Reminder: you will meet with your seminar groups on Wednesday to prepare for the seminar on Thursday.
